Why does the Fire Department respond with an ambulance to a medical call?
In a medical emergency, time is of the essence. Each fire station has personnel trained to the level of Emergency Medical Technician and/or Paramedic. Our responding rescue units are licensed First Responder vehicles through the State of Georgia Department of Human Resources EMS Division.

In most cases, a Fire / Rescue unit will arrive on scene prior to the ambulance. Life saving medical assistance can begin immediately in preparation for the arrival of the ambulance and subsequence transport to the hospital. In addition, during complicated medical emergencies, Fire Department personnel will assist the ambulance crew during transport, increasing patient care while en route to the medical facility.
